I got most of the context and really enjoyed what I understood. There were a few times where I could have used a bit more background. It made ancient Rome seem much more contemporary.

This book is compiled nicely, and without wordiness which can make studies of ancient Rome dull. Watch for the addressees of Pliny's letters to learn more about the interaction of Rome's movers and shakers. Read and then reread as you will have missed details if you go too fast!

Once you place yourself into the time period, work the language, fact is better than fiction. Such amazing times!

As I write, I am delighting in Pliny's superb capacity for friendship and his ability to massage his relationships at a distance, frequently to his own advantage. I'm afraid the e-mail and text messages of today don't resonate in the same way.

A collection of letters from about 1900 years ago might be dusty, out of date and a mere curiosity, but the letters of Pliny are far from this. I am no latinist and know little of ancient Rome, so it was a delight to find such an approachable translation. The freshness of the letters surprises me. The things that exercised Pliny are very similar to those that concern us now. Political infighting, intrigue, character assassination, banishment and death over those things so familiar to us: theft, nepotism and the kind of cynical respectable corruption where the rich amass more at the expense of the less wealthy. Pliny seems to me to be at his best when he loses his consciousness of self and tells the story of his trials, his successes and his failures. He was clever and conscientious and a Good Man, but what a peacock! Pliny's arch references to his abilities and his sensitivity to the good opinion of others is amusing and more than a little embarrassing. I suppose we all have friends like that whose company we seek out until they speak of themselves.I was left with the strong impression that life in Ancient Rome was far more like our own than ever I imagined it to be. The details of life were different but the principles were much the same. Romans had the same civic concerns as we do now, but failure then was a more serious business. Exile, confiscation of estates, a requirement to commit suicide and judicial or illegal death were the lot of those who judged it wrong.Things were different, and I'm glad (and perhaps relieved) that my life is not forfeit should I choose wrong, but these letters give us much insight into a world 1900 years older than their writer. Perhaps Pliny was not outstanding at all of this in Ancient Rome, but he wrote and it is he we know when others are forgotten.I'd recommend this book to anyone with an interest in human nature.

Pliny's letters are often read for their surface message, which appears to be about the routine life of a Roman bureaucrat. However, a closer read reveals that these letters are rich in puzzles and enigmas. Very intriguing.

This item was sent as a gift and was very well received. It arrived in good time and was reasonably priced.

Pliny saw himself as a writer and you can see that in his carefully thought-out pleasing phrases and sentences. This was a delightful read, with much that is quotable. You have to wait until the end of the book to see the breezy Roman way he makes the decision to execute a couple of Christian women. Kind of makes you cringe. Interestingly, Pliny pleads his ignorance about Christians but that doesn't stop him from executing them. Maybe with our bigoted press and world opinion turning negative toward Christians it could happen today.

One would think, 'Zumthor must be a man from Mars to build architecture like that' and 'his writings must be a strong sleeping pill.' Usual Suspect !He writes extremely clear with extremely simple terms. This slim book tells us how an architect of such originality thinks and experiences daily life. It's a great pleasure to find out what kind of music (Mozart's piano concertos) zumthor listens; what kind of artists (Beuys and Merz) he likes; what kind of film he watches (Ettore Scola's film Le Bal); what kind of books (Calvino) he reads; and what kind of sayings ("the hard core beauty") in the radio show captivates him. A former cabinet maker, his book is carefully jointed, just like his buildings. Anyone who found this book fun/inspiring to read should also try Alvaro Siza's "Writings on Architecture"

Zumthor's _Thinking Architecture_ and _Atmospheres_ are iconic additions to the lexicon of architectural theory. Zumthor is a humble giant, and his concern with the phenomenological experience of the user, as well as with the performative aspects of building, point the way to a twenty-first century architecture that is kinder and more responsible than the architectures of the twentieth. This is a must-read for all architects and designers, and if you find yourself thinking Zumthor to be ho-hum or you don't agree with him, I ask you: As an architect who do you serve? If your answer is one rooted in a wider ethic, Zumthor will resonate with you.

This book is an excellent intorduction to Zumthor's architecture. This book makes us think about what is essential in architecture, why and how you go about creating the "real" presence of built environments (at least, we get to appreciate Zumthor's perspective on it). Most importantly why that matters for us as well as for Zumthor. We think we knew and we think we understood. But, reading this book, I realized how much I have forgotten and how important it is to remind ourselves of some of the significant and yet, simple truths in thinking of built environment. He describes these in plain but powerful words. For me, his view on the "real" presence of architecture was very appealing. In seeking 'factual truth' in architecture, Zumthor explains what matters to him in his consideration of "specific" contexts and issues. This book gives us some clues about why his buildings exude such extraordinary aura and how they might have been conceived. It is not about big abstract theories no one understands. It is not about complicated geometry or formal exuberance so many contemporary architects seem to be obsessed with. It is a relatively short but, very powerful book. It's highly recommended. Peter Zumthor, one of the real masters in architecture today talks about his desire to design a building that takes on its own life afterwards. To him, the real presence of architecture doesn't require any rhetoric or any further explanation. His architecture is not about form-making and certainly doesn't stem from digital processes. It is not about rhetorical/ critical diagrams as a point of departure. It is not necessarily about sustainability. His architecture doesn't seek to be showy and spectacular. It seeks to "belong", belong to the context, site, and surroundings, therefore to our presence. Creating the new but only in a way that enhances the existing. From another perspective, it is about "place-making": making a place/ spatial conditions that become part of our physical presence in this world. His pursuit of the real and the essential seems solidly grounded in modernism. And yet, he is capable of going beyond the capacity of modernist architecture the way we are familiar with. It has something to do with his focus on "atmosphere"-making. To him, making spaces always comes with a certain concept related to atmospheres. He explains his understanding of "atmosphere" in architecture in another book. Zumthor may be called one of the pre-eminent architects of the "New Modern", which differs from post-modern. It is unexpectedly refreshing to read his words. Just like anything else in life, doing basic things well is important and if you do, that alone could take you quite far. Such an admirable architect.... He once said 'Life is too short to compromise'...... Good for him. I wish I could be like that.....

This book single handedly got me through Architecture school. It taught my how to get into the design thinking mentality and to be able to converse with those around me. Written very thoughtfully yet complex, it really forces you to understand the core values of Architectural thinking and to learn how to apply those.

An excellent read. Clears up the foggy representation of Church life so commonly represented by Western culture. Due to its simplicity and relatively short read, I purchased several of these I intend to give out with tracts I use "Life is a Gift" by G. W. North."Life Is a Gift"Human life is a gift. However it develops later on, it starts as a gift. We say that a mother gives birth to a child. No-one ever thinks of saying he gave himself life or birth. We all recognize that both were given to us. We did not work for or earn the life we have, nor did we even desire or will it. We came into the world for better or worse, without any say in the matter. We were just born. Whatever the known biological facts, it is God who gives the breath of life to every living soul.Eternal spiritual life is as much a gift as natural life is. So Jesus Christ says, “You must be born again.” There is no alternative. How can a man believe he must be born naturally and yet not believe he must also be born spiritually? The man in the Bible to whom Jesus said, “You must be born again” never questioned the necessity of it, nor did he imagine there was any alternative to it. He was only baffled as to the possibility of it. He did not say “Why?” but “How?” Is there an enlightened soul anywhere on earth who will deny that he also needs a new life - not just a different, reformed, amended life, but an altogether new one?God sent Jesus Christ into this world to meet that need. He says, “I have come that you may have life,” plainly implying that man has not begun to live until he receives the life that Jesus offers. He did not say, “I have come to add to your existing life, to help you improve or mend it, or make atonement for the past.” He has no intention of doing any such thing, for that is man’s way, whether by politics, science, education, philosophy or religion. God’s way is by birth, and because it is God’s way it must be man’s, for man has no choice in the matter. God ordained the birth-way for mankind. To have natural life you must be born. Similarly, to have eternal life you must be born again.Nowhere is it disputed that the life of Jesus Christ is the most desirable of all lives this earth has ever witnessed. Its righteousness, purity, holiness, love and power were indestructible and proved unconquerable, even by death itself. Being of such quality, it is eternal. A person and his life are one. It can therefore be easily seen that no man can possibly have Jesus’ personal life until Jesus comes into him, for Jesus is that life. He is God’s gift to you. He was and is and ever will be God’s Son - God was His Father. God, wishing to give you eternal life, will give birth and life to you if you will fulfill His conditions. Whoever you are, God’s will is to give you that same eternal life that was in the Man Jesus. But in order to have it you must be born again. Our first birth was entirely physical, but the second birth is an entirely spiritual one. It is a miracle of God.Are you prepared to begin all over again? Do you really want to make a completely new start? There are few who do not wish at heart that they could be different. Have you at times honestly wished you could live your life all over again? Then here is your opportunity. At this point receive inward assurance that you have the power to do what God requires of you. Only believe and God will do the miracle. The power is called faith, which is simply the determined response of your whole being to God. Do it now.Be definite by a sincere act of will:1. Turn absolutely from the past. 2. Believe on God’s Son Jesus Christ with your whole heart. 3. Receive Him into your entire being; confess Him as your own indwelling Savior and Lord. This is the act of cooperation God requires of you. Edwards truly gave an inspired sermon. If you read the preface it shares he showed no emotion, didn’t focus on anyone and only read what he wrote. Unlike his contemporaries he was not a theatrical individual, and yet this sermon is viewed as one of the most powerful revival deliveries ever produced. As a Christian justified in the blood of Christ, I was very moved by his words. I felt the pains of sadness for those individuals who still haven’t accepted Jesus as their personal savior. While I want to think this sermon might convince some who don’t know Jesus to become born again, I am not sure it will. Non believers might think Edward’s words and supported scripture is just another ridiculous act to scare people to convert. At least some in my family would think that. It is why I pray daily that they and others will find their way to Christ and realize the purity of His love as none other.

I facilitate a weekly men's bible study and we were preparing to begin an eight week session on another Amazon book, "Heaven Revealed" by Paul Enns. It seemed a good idea that before we began to read and discuss Heaven, we should, perhaps, study a bit about Hell. So we looked at C.S. Lewis's chapter on Hell in his "The Problem of Pain," and Jonathan Edwards' "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." Jonathan Edwards "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" is the transcript of his multiple-hour sermon which he delivered in Enfield, Connecticut, on July 8, 1741.Jonathan Edwards was a brilliant man who spoke with a quiet voice and who had severe myopia (nearsightedness). When he delivered his sermon, he did it hunched over and with his voice projecting downward. Never-the-less, it is said people listening were screaming in fear and grasping tightly onto pews so they wouldn't fall into destruction. Why that reaction by his hearers is a great reason to read this very special book!The entire sermon uses Deuteronomy 32:35 ("Their foot shall slide in due time...") to warn of the consequence for unbelievers. In our culture where God is so often portrayed as "love" we may forget that God is also pure and holy and has no tolerance for sin. This sermon speaks to the this side of God and the lot of sinners who die without Christ. It isn't a pretty picture that Edwards paints. The reason this sermon is considered a Christian classic is that his words are timeless, blunt and soul-piercing.Our men's group gained immensely from the three sessions we devoted to this great book. It prepared us for the much more positive study of Heaven. I recommend it highly!

After buying and reading Jonathan Edwards' sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," it's not hard to see why it was considered by some to be his most important message, if not one of the most important messages preached in America, regardless of the time period. In our present culture of "social engineering" it's rare to hear that a sovereign and righteous God the creator of all things could be "angry!" After all, God is "love" how dare anyone judge Him angry! And yet, as Edwards instructs, anyone who rejects the price of their redemption, paid in full by the precious blood of God's only Son will justifiably receive God's full wrath and eternal damnation. The only thing preventing God's wrath and judgement is His overwhelming love and mercy; He holds out the opportunity for one to accept His Son's sacrificial death on the cross until their very last breath, beyond that, a righteous God must condemn. Let him who has eyes see and him that has ears hear, before it's too late.

I owned the original Marvel Presents comics with the 31st century Guardians. They are collected in this volume along with the GoG earlier appearances in The Defenders. What is not to like about a band of genetically modified humans and the mysterious Starhawk (One who knows) cruising around the galaxy in their starship: Captain America? This futures back story is one of global warming, colonization, and alien invasions. Perfect stuff for the pre Star Wars times and the right blend of science fiction and super heroism. If you only know the current Guardians, you owe it to yourself to get a taster for their future counterparts.

A cool book showing the first stories of the original Guardians of the Galaxy. If you're a fan of the team that started it all, or have read all of the stories about the newer team and want to read something a little different, then I recommend this book.

Not the guys from the movie, but rather the original team. Starts out as more traditional sci-fi comic, till Steve Gerber takes over. Then it gets weird.

I have been reading comic books for 38 years no started in the mid 70's and I read these stories back then but it has been so long I had forgotten most of the stories. Now I am not a fan of the new team that marvel is offering us today but that is ok the original Guardians have enough stuff out to keep me happy. so if you have never read the original team hay give them a try. Now you wount find a fifteen foot talking tree or a smart mouth raccoon type characters but you will find a mess of fun stories.

One of my favorite comic book memories finally able to reread.

Loved it! This was a great recap of the things i missed as a child. There was not a lot of availability where I grew up in the 70's.

She's looking to break out of a dating slump and agrees to go; they end up having a wonderful time and a long distance romance begins. But as they grow closer, will either of them admit that it's more than just a fling?I will say two good things and one criticism about the book. The first good thing: it is a joy to read, like sipping hot chocolate, warm and sweet and goes down easy. In this tumultuous time we're living in, that goes a LONG way; it is pure comfort reading. The writing is funny and effortless. I never wanted to stop reading, and I felt satisfied when it was done.The second good thing is how much I enjoyed reading a book with two professionally accomplished leads. They both have challenging careers, and they both care about their work and are good at it. We see both of them in professional settings, thinking about their work, stressing about things that matter. Alexa is trying to fund an arts program for at-risk teenagers, and Drew has a kid who's not recovering well after surgery. They also both have broad social circles filled with interesting, good people. I really enjoyed reading a book in which the characters are essentially all role models. Alexa in particular is a well drawn character, with relatable insecurities and a sharp, funny way of looking at the world. Drew is a bit more generic, but he's still a good guy.And this brings me to the criticism -- there isn't any real conflict. Drew is commitment phobic, and tends to dump women after a few months; and Alexa is worried about getting attached to him. But this doesn't ever go anywhere. I always find it irritating when the big conflict of the book could be resolved if either character would just talk to the other one. What's a little stranger is that there is potential for real conflict here. Alexa is black and Drew is white, and beyond that, Ms. Mallory does talk about the white privilege that Drew enjoys, and there is one instance where he makes a somewhat uninformed remark about her youth program. I'm curious why she didn't build more conflict around that -- not around racial issues, particularly; I liked that they were inter-racial. But why not build conflict that is more original and specific to who these people are, and the work they do? At one point Ms. Mallory mentions in passing that they have to learn how to adapt to two difficult and challenging careers; that is also an interesting conflict, rarely explored, and these are two characters who could handle it.There's part of me that enjoyed a book in which nothing bad happens, but it also was a little odd that this is a book in which nothing much happens: two attractive, likable, accomplished people meet, fall in love, and.... the end, basically!All that being said -- it was warm, and sweet, and comforting, and funny, and I'm on board for all of that. A good read that deserves to be read.(And P.S. just to back up what Roxane Gay said in her 5-star review: it is very funny how much they ate. I guess since they weren't fighting, and they couldn't have sex ALL the time, they needed something else to do, so they ate constantly -- donuts, waffles, burgers, burritos, more donuts, more donuts. It was kind of hysterical.)

I wanted to love it. The two leads have real jobs and each has a small circle of friends. But there was no oomph to the plot. I felt like the characters were just spinning their wheels until the inevitable happy ending. There wasn't even a good sense of place. San Francisco should be a good setting but this was the most generic version of SF.

Fun, frothy rom-com read that would make a delightful movie. (Admit I've been dream casting it in my head ever since I finished reading it. Think I mentally settled on Chris Pine and Nicole Beharie for the leads. Make it happen, Hollywood!)From the moment Alexa and Drew meet cute in a stuck elevator and she agrees to be his wedding date for the weekend, sparks fly between the poised political operative and hunky pediatrician. As their cross-California romance goes from faux to fabulous, the two see if there's more to their relationship than just a couple wild weekends.Devoured this on vacation and it's the perfect beach read. Smart, funny, a little bit sexy (but not graphic), and just a truly delightful summer, or anytime, read. And while it's undeniably light reading, it also has stuck with me long after most modern romances have totally faded from memory. Jasmine Guillory is a true find and I can't wait to read what she has coming out next. (It's THE PROPOSAL, another fun-as-heck sounding romance, which I've already pre-ordered.)

Cliched, boring, predictable plot lurches from one soft porn love scene to the next. I was looking for something light and easy and entertaining, but I couldn't even finish this one.

Saw this on a buzz feed article about fun summer reads and it being a great rom-com style book. It wasn't.The two characters were mildly interesting, but their "relationship development" was a span of 2 months of weekend sex trips. It only bothered me because in the "sample" and even the build up of the wedding, there was such promise of a cute story, but then you got past their first hookup and it was like the author didn't know what else to do besides have them bone down for 75% of the book.Also, the text fighting and juvenile fighting packed depth and believability to the romatic notion that these two characters would be together.
