Review
“Baratz-Logsted weaves in just enough history to root Mamie’s story in her time, a moment when a nation came together and felt proud of human possibilities. . . . Readers will be charmed by Mamie’s story of hope in a difficult moment in American history.†―Kirkus Reviews“Against the highly gendered backdrop of 1969 (all the girls want to marry astronauts, while the boys want to become them), Mamie’s friendship with her neighbor Buster is particularly moving. Mamie and Buster share a fixation on the space race, and Buster remains loyal and constant even as Mamie’s parents’ conflict erupts. Mamie’s isolation at home echoes Collins’s solitude in orbit a bit too neatly, but her bravery and loyalty are memorable.†―Publishers Weekly

I received this yesterday and read it all last night. It's a great story about Mamie, a 10-year-old girl who's trying to figure out a lot of things in her life and pours her heart into a series of letters to Apollo 11 astronaut Michael Collins. She feels drawn to him because he gets less attention than Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. The space race and Apollo 11 flight details do a great job of tying together all the other events in Mamie's life from a less-than-perfect family to school and friendship issues.
This is a great book for an older child/pre-tween. The story about a young girl and her struggles to find her place both within her school social hierarchy and within her imperfect family is engaging and timeless. The historical subplot of the Apollo 11 launch unfolds in a manner that is well intertwined with the main plot and captivating for young audiences. I imagine that this book would certainly spark a child's interest in history and astronomy. It also introduces very positive themes about resilience, individuality, responsibility and commitment, etc. I have already recommended it to my precocious almost 9-year old niece and hope to introduce it to my son (who is under 2) when the time comes!
This book started off weird, slow, and hard to get in to. My third grader wasn’t really into bedtime reading when we were on this book, but we continued on. About half way through it picked up, and by the end we couldn’t put it down. What a beautiful story, that I may have teared up over at the end ;). My third grader could not read this on his own, so I read it to him. He is a little behind on reading, so I think this would be a good challenge for most third graders. All three of my boys loved that they got to try Tang and TV dinners as a result of this book lol. I personally enjoyed learning more about Apollo 11. I didn’t know much, and this was a really great and unique way to learn about it!
This wonderful book brings to light the importance of the one person who makes the sacrifices to stay behind for the greater good. Baratz-Logsted uses the story of the Apollo 11 space mission to weave a touching story, as told through the letters written by a young girl, about family and friendship that captivates the reader. This young adult book is a perfect selection for any classroom teacher. I'm buying a copy to send in to my daughter's fifth grade class! Two thumbs up!
From my 8 year old daughter, "I loved this book because it has a great story to be told. The letters are really neat. Michael Collins is not just an astronaut; he is also Mamie's friend." "The letters are like real. It is like fiction and nonfiction." Her 3rd teacher read it to her class as a read aloud. She begged me to buy this book even though she knows what happens so that we can share the story together.
This is a well thought out book that follows a young girl through the summer of 1969 when the US was headed to the moon. The girl gets the writing assignment in school before summer break, but continues writing to astronaut Michael Collins through the moon landing. She uses the letters as a story of diary of her summer. I enjoyed following her trials and tribulations.
I loved this book. I never really have understood all of the hype with space travel and it seems like it is just not taught, but this book makes me want to learn more!
LOVED this book! It was recommended by my 10 year old grand daughter and I loved all the life lessons in this book.... Facing your fear, working hard, staying the course, and the importance of family and friends. I grew up during the space race and it brought back so many memories. Well written and a great book for all ages. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
