I bought this for my nephew, though it was with reservation. I love books but he doesn't, and I've wasted a lot of money on books he's never bothered to open.Saw him yesterday, and the first thing he and his father (also not a reader) wanted to tell me about was this book! I had even forgotten I'd sent it, and they didn't want to talk about all the other cool toys and gadgets I've sent since then, they wanted to talk about this. Apparently, they've been working their way through the book and have enjoyed it more than they thought they'd ever enjoy "just a book".I did manage to sneak a look through it and it does a very good job of making science feel like fun and not a learning experience. They've certainly learned a lot without realizing it. A common problem with books like these is that the dramatic experiments tend to be too dangerous for a book like this and the experiments that get selected don't seem to do much. They've done a fantastic job of picking experiments with a high payoff. Either you feel like you accomplished something, you ended up with something very cool at the end of it, or it does something exciting. All this and none of the ingredients are terribly difficult to find even in a small town. I can remember books like this from my youth that had impossible experiments because you couldn't get the chemicals you needed.Overall, it's just a complete win and in a very tough category to boot!
My son, his cousins, his friends and his mom & I have all had a blast doing various experiments from this book, over the last few weeks. I love that all the kids are spending time away from electronics and have been very happy to see how much all the kids have enjoyed it too! Plus, they've learned some cool stuff and will have several options to choose from for their next school science project!
Even nicer than I thought t was going to be! I ordered the book for my nephew in a hurry and didn't really get a chance to look at the details or description very well. I was pleasantly surprised when it came in before the expectydelivery date and when I saw that it was a hard cover book as I thought it was a paper back. lol Can't wait to give the book to my nephew :)
This is one book you can judge by its cover; it is campy and filled with easy home experiments for elementary and middle school aged kids or grown ups, like myself, that enjoy the retro bit of fun it can bring to an afternoon. The items needed to perform the experiments are readily attainable if you don't already have them in your home.
This was a big hit with my 8 year old son. Lots of science experiments you can do at home with things you have around the house (like baking soda, etc). Some require small extra purchases or have slightly unusual requirements, but nothing extraordinary. Has become a cool gift for his friends too.
Got this book for our 8 year old son. He has loved it and we have done a few of the experiments in it with great success. The experiments are engaging, hands on and use materials that we usually have around the house. The layout of the book is great too and easy to read with information in small chunks with cool graphics. With other books, the materials used are often random and take a trip to the craft store or hobby shop...or they are included in an expensive kit. But in the case of this book, the material lists are simple and easily found around our house already. It's very good and just daring enough to keep a boy's enthusiasm high. My 6 year old daughter enjoys it as well.
If this author would have titled this book: "Brain surgery 101" he would have come closer to the truth than his current title. Totally irresponsible science leads one to believe that this book is chock full of daring, potentially dangerous experiments, on the cutting edge! Right, if you think that mixing vinegar with baking soda (an experiment he repeats and relies heavily on) is walking on the edge of danger, well, I suppose you could say that. However, for myself, I need a little more challenge than these 1930's ideas for your childs volcano project. Every thing about this guy (the author) says 'con-man'. I'm not sending the book back as I have found a use for it under the leg of an uneven table I have in my shop.
I bought this book for my youngest son and he loves it!
