Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire have a combined population of about 3 million people, so even though this guide is small, consider how it might compare to a guide to a similar sized country. The guide is far from comprehensive, but offers a selective and representative collection of attractions, lodgings and restaurants. And if there's something that deserves to stand out, Fodor has made sure to bring your attention to it. For example, the guide highly recommends a visit to Vermont's beautiful and frequently overlooked capital of Montpelier.What you will NOT get is a house by house catalog of the historic structures in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The authors will draw your attention to the fact that Portsmouth is world famous for its existing Georgian architecture, and will leave it for you to explore further.Listings are sparse but well chosen. Contexts are very thin, indeed, but, once again the guide gives you enough information and guidance to steer your interest. The section on Fall Foliage Drives is nice, and the routes are well thought through. Fall color is truly one of the world famous attractions to this part of the globe.Generally, I'm quite satisfied with this book. Also, keep in mind that the value of the book is in its words, not so much in its photography.

great help for trip plans

I collect Fodor's Travel books! I have since I was a teenager. I always promise myself that I will one day go to those places that I love reading about! And while it's been about 12 years since I was last there, I do believe that Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire have some of the most beautiful fall foliage of any of the 48 contiguous states I've been in! Simply gorgeous! And I'd love to go again. Maybe next fall!From the first pages, which do, indeed, feature photographs of fall foliage, we see the Top Reasons To Go:* Fall Foliage* Regional Food (You haven't eaten until you've eaten fresh caught Maine lobster!)* Outdoor Fun ( Hiking, boating, biking, or simply taking in the views!)* Small Towns (I love the small town greens and small taverns!)* Fantastic Skiing (You'll have to trust the book here! I am so afraid of downhill skiing! Shushing I'm fine with!)* The Coast (A look of the Atlantic standing high above on an overlooking cliff, and you will never think of the ocean the same again! Simply a beautiful sight! Especially when you are standing next to an ancient lighthouse! Superb!)I can't wait to make another trip up! It's an amazing experience if you haven't been yet. And if you haven't, then grab a copy of this book. Having traveled to most of the areas described I highly recommend this travel guide. While their coverage of Vermont is particularly good, with everything from awesome out of the way restaurants to the big name tourist draws given nods the information on New Hampshire and Maine is excellent as well. The book is divided by state with each state further divided by region followed by the regions being divided by locality. It's a common sense way to break things down but it does mean the index will have to be referred to frequently since some of the more major tourist areas and cities are on the edges of these designated areas.This book follows the fodors format with helpful little notes for things that are top choices, family friendly, and so on. This makes the guide a good place to start when planning a trip while still being helpful while on the trip itself.While this is a great book to use as a general travel guide I wouldn't recommend it for the scenic drives feature. It's ok information but a road atlas and quick online search will give more diverse and detailed information with less effort than reading those pages in this guide.

This was my first time getting a kindle guidebook and it took a little getting used to. I'm so used to dogearing corners of guide books (don't tell our librarian!) that creating digital bookmarks and tabbing around took me a while to get down (and in fact slightly impeded my use of the guidebook). That said, it was an interesting experiment, and I'm glad we tried it. The book itself was thorough, clearly well researched and a good reference book. I enjoy books that convey a bit of the spirit of a place to me, and this book didn't do that, but it was fairly encyclopedic in its coverage of every town, hotel and restaurant we went to (and yelp and tripadvisor took care of the rest). Well researched, good resource.
