“A ‘must-read’ for anyone who wants to teach mindfulness in groups. The authors’ experience and talent shine through every page. They spell out for readers what is often implied in hands-on teacher trainings. A special bonus is how mindfulness and compassion are seamlessly woven together. Highly recommended!” —Christopher Germer, PhD, author of The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion, coeditor of Mindfulness and Psychotherapy, and clinical instructor in psychology at Harvard Medical School"What a beautiful, wise, and user-friendly handbook on how to teach mindfulness. I also appreciate how the authors provide clear directions on how to support the clinician’s ability to sit in the mindfulness teacher’s seat with greater wisdom and humility.”―Bob Stahl, PhD, coauthor of A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workbook, Living with Your Heart Wide Open, Calming the Rush of Panic, A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workbook for Anxiety, and MBSR Every Day“I can’t imagine a more ideal how-to-teach-mindfulness manual! This book offers clear and comprehensive support in learning to lead meditations, offer beginners classes, and respond to the natural challenges and questions that arise in introducing mindfulness to clients. Keep this guide close at hand―it will enable you to bring your full intelligence, heart, and confidence to sharing these life-transforming practices.”―Tara Brach, PhD, author of Radical Acceptance and True Refuge“What a practical, thorough, extraordinary book. Wolf and Serpa give a crystal clear road map for any professional wanting to teach mindfulness in clinical settings. Their detailed lesson plans and voice-of-experience guidance are infused with their own deep practice of mindfulness, encouraging support, and clinical acumen. Highly recommended.”―Rick Hanson, PhD, author of Buddha’s Brain: The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Love, and Wisdom“Broad in scope, yet practical, A Clinician’s Guide to Teaching Mindfulness can serve as a resource for secular mindfulness teacher training programs. Clearly the result of years of experience, this book provides especially good support for new instructors, while those with experience will appreciate its clarity and fresh perspectives.”  ―Sharon Salzberg, author of Lovingkindness and Real Happiness“Wolf and Serpa have given us a wonderful gift―a clear, complete, and inspiring guide for teaching the basics of mindfulness. The authors’ deep understanding of this topic from both Buddhist and psychotherapist perspectives is evident throughout, and helps to make this book not only a very practical manual, but also a succinct and direct guide for how to become a more effective and comfortable teacher or facilitator of mindfulness. This book will be highly valuable for anyone interested in this area, regardless of prior experience. Absolutely the best book on this topic I have encountered.”―Bruce D. Naliboff, PhD, research professor of medicine and psychiatry, and biobehavioral sciences director in the pain research program at the Gail and Gerald Oppenheimer Family Center for Neurobiology of Stress at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA“A Clinician’s Guide to Teaching Mindfulness is a wonderful guide for far more than only clinicians! There is no one on this life’s journey who cannot deepen their experience and their joy through understanding and practicing mindfulness. When we as clinicians, in the broadest sense of the word, advance our capacity to understand and teach these fundamental concepts, this way of being in the world and in our lives will take root more organically. It will become a fundamental way of being. I would highly recommend this book as a guide to all of us who would like to better help ourselves and others discover, understand, and integrate this way of being.” ―Tracy W. Gaudet, MD, executive director of the Office of Patient Centered Care and Cultural Transformation, US Department of Veterans Affairs“Thorough, practical, and full of heart and integrity. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking to get started or enhance their ability to teach mindfulness individually or in groups.”―Elisha Goldstein, PhD, author of Uncovering Happiness“Teaching and guiding mindfulness requires a mindful practice. As with any skill, the more experience one has the more effective they will be. I have found that there is tremendous variance in teachers of mindfulness and some are much more effective than others. It provides strategic tips and supports how your own practice can be authentically shared with others so we can all walk together on a more mindful path. I highly recommend it!”―David Rakel, MD, founder and director of Integrative Medicine at the University of Wisconsin, and associate professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health“A Clinician’s Guide to Teaching Mindfulness offers a wise and practical immersion into the nuts and bolts of guiding others, and oneself, into the daily practice of mindfulness meditation. This book is truly a gem. As an aspiring mindfulness facilitator, I cannot thank the authors enough for what they've provided here. It is so timely and of enormous service to the field. For those of us passionate about the path of mindfulness and sharing it's benefits with others, this book is the perfect companion. I feel immensely relieved as I consider all that is provided here. We literally get “the nuts and bolts of launching a mindfulness class" with a complete curriculum. Here is what I'm most excited about. To quote the authors:"After reading this book you will know:• How to deepen and support your own mindfulness practice• How to set up and start a six-week Introduction to Mindfulness class for your group• How to teach the class and the individual components with confidence" (p.2)All I can say is WOW… This is exactly what I’ve been looking for so to have a book that can guide me step by step is truly a gift. And I should mention that I'm in the field of education so this book is really for anyone. As the authors say: "No matter what your background is, this book is the right place to plan, set up and start teaching mindfulness and compassion" (p.3). So exciting.A Clinician's Guide to Teaching Mindfulness is such a comprehensive book and is jam-packed with practical knowledge, wisdom and guidance. I truly believe that anyone who gets a hold of this book will be thanking the authors for a very long time… I know I already am! ' Thank you Christiane and Greg for providing what is clearly a gift for those of us on the path.

The book is very helpful for starting a mindfulness meditation group -- the cover states that the curriculum and client worksheets are download-able -- The link for this is at the bottom of the first page in Chapter 4. I expected it in the index or some such. Just thought I'd shared this info.

Bravo to this breakthrough, must-read book on teaching mindfulness, but also on mindfulness itself. It is both a primer and a mindful experience. Reading it, I was able to touch back into the MBSR, self-compassion, and psychotherapy and meditation workshops I have attended at Spirit Rock, Harvard Medical School, and Insight L.A. The book provides meditation scripts, examples of quotes and poetry that work well in groups, specific homework ideas, and serves as a wonderful safety net for facilitators, offering solutions to many different scenarios that might occur. This primer beautifully balances an explanation of the breadth and depth of mindfulness with providing a do-able, enriching step-by-step way to lead mindfulness groups. (Submitted by Amy Spies - writer, mindful writing teacher).

This is an excellent, well-rounded handbook for teaching mindfulness classes. Even though the title says this is a "clinician's guide," it is applicable in many settings - I teach mindfulness in a public yoga studio, not at all a clinical environment. The authors also address the debates and concerns around so-called secular mindfulness, and demonstrate deep knowledge and great respect for the Buddhist teachings that provide the source and inspiration for mindfulness technique and philosophy. There's lots of good nuts and bolts information in here about guiding meditations and facilitating groups. Finally, I love that they also give suggestions for illustrative stories and poems to use in class, because I'm always getting stuck when trying to come up with those on my own!

I bought this book as it was required reading for the Insight LA mindfulness facilitator training. I'm generally wary of rehashed Buddhism as perpetrated by Kornfield, Salzberg et al, preferring to work directly with the canon and its interpretations. That resistance softens when I encounter work like this. Work that speaks to context and provides practical hands on guidance. This does, in a compelling way. As I approach the challenge of sharing the benefits of practice that I have found with others, I can't think of a better guide for understanding my role in that process, and for providing a solid foundation on which to build.Full disclosure I have sat and practiced with Christiane many times. She is a joy. I am biased.

An amazingly comprehensive, crystal-clear guide for those seeking to teach mindfulness meditation. No detail necessary to create a a 6-week program is overlooked in this book. Each session is fully outlined, complete with scripts, as well as suggestions for how and when to use them, or not. New teachers, experienced teachers, psychotherapists - each (and all) can follow this path to success - while being fully informed of possible pitfalls and how to navigate them. This book gives you the complete set of tools to teach Mindfuess - and the confidence!

I cannot recommend this practical and detailed guide to teaching mindfulness highly enough. Clearly, it is written with a great deal of experience and understanding in the field and this provides the practitioner with a comprehensive guide to sharing mindfulness with others. It is written from such a practical viewpoint, ensuring success for initiating a program teaching mindful meditation. The emphasis on the teacher's personal practice was, for me, helpful and rich in guidance. I've not found a book anywhere quite as user-friendly and engaging as A Clinician's Guide to Teaching Mindfulness. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to work with students in any type of setting.

I facilitate mindfulness meditation in the LA prisons and jails and also lead a peer led sitting group. I have found this book to be extremely beneficial. It offers numerous ways of how you can improve what you're currently doing. A 'must read' for anyone who wants to teach mindfulness in groups. I'm currently in a year long training program at UCLA to complete a mindfulness facilitator certification and have found the curriculum piece quite helpful in putting together a six to eight week program. Very user friendly and easy to follow. A true GIFT.
