Twin 15-year-old siblings Sophie and Josh Newman take summer jobs in San Francisco across the street from one another: she at a coffee shop, he at a bookstore owned by Nick and Perry Fleming. In the vey first chapter, armed goons garbed in black with "dead-looking skin and... marble eyes" (actually Golems) storm the bookshop, take Perry hostage and swipe a rare Book (but not before Josh snatches its two most important pages). The stolen volume is the Codex, an ancient text of magical wisdom. Nick Fleming is really Nicholas Flamel, the 14th-century alchemist who could turn base metal into gold, and make a potion that ensures immortality. Sophie and Josh learn that they are mentioned in the Codex's prophecies: "The two that are one will come either to save or to destroy the world." Mayhem ensues, as Irish author Scott draws on a wide knowledge of world mythology to stage a battle between the Dark Elders and their hired gun—Dr. John Dee—against the forces of good, led by Flamel and the twins (Sophie's powers are "awakened" by the goddess Hekate, who'd been living in an elaborate treehouse north of San Francisco). Not only do they need the Codex back to stop Dee and company, but the immortality potion must be brewed afresh every month. Time is running out, literally, for the Flamels. Proceeding at a breakneck pace, and populated by the likes of werewolves and vampires, the novel ends on a precipice, presumably to be picked up in volume two. Ages 12-up. Starred Review. Grade 6-9–Scott uses a gigantic canvas for this riveting fantasy. The well-worn theme of saving the world from the forces of evil gets a fresh look here as he incorporates ancient myth and legend and sets it firmly, pitch-perfect, in present-day California. At the emotional center of the tale are contemporary 15-year-old twins, Josh and Sophie, who, it turns out, are potentially powerful magicians. They are spoken of in a prophecy appearing in the ancient Book of Abraham the Mage, all but two pages of which have been stolen by evil John Dee, alchemist and magician. The pursuit of the twins and Flamel by Dee and his allies to get the missing pages constitutes the book's central plot. Amid all this exhilarating action, Scott keeps his sights on the small details of character and dialogue and provides evocative descriptions of people, mythical beings, and places. He uses as his starting point the figures of the historical alchemist Nicholas Flamel and his wife, who have found the secret of immortality, along with mythical beings, including the terrifying Scottish crow-goddess, the Morrigan; the three-faced Greek Hekate; the powerful Egyptian cat-goddess, Bastet; and Scathach, a legendary Irish woman warrior and vegetarian vampire. While there is plenty here to send readers rushing to their encyclopedias of mythology and alchemy, those who read the book at face value will simply be caught up in the enthralling story. The Alchemist is just one book of this remarkable series of books, and it is better to comment on the whole series as I just finished reading them all, back to back. I'm 76, been reading sci fi and fantasy since I was 12 or so, that is a slew of books. And that includes all the recent series of books that have been published as "young adult" literature, and I have found them all entertaining reading. And, I have to put this series by Michael Scott at the top of the list, more interesting characters, more twists and turns and surprize in the plot that you can imagine, and not a dull moment through the whole series. I really recommend them if you have any taste at all for this kind of literature. Just give yourself some space to read, once you start, it is very difficult to stop. Enjoy!
This is yet another book that has been on my to-read list forever, and I’m so happy I finally got to read it! The first book follows a brother and a sister who are twins — when trying to help out a bookshop owner who seems to be in trouble, they discover that he’s actually Nicholas Flamel, an alchemist who discovered the secret of immortality. Other forces want the secret for themselves and steal the book where everything’s written down. Because the twins helped Nicholas out, they get mixed up in this fight for control and are enlisted to help Nicholas get the book back. The Alchemyst begins a series of six books, and because of that focuses a lot on worldbuilding and setting up what’s going to be the focus for the rest of the series. So, it’s a bit slow and while there are some moments of action and conflict, a lot of it is exposition. I really like the mythology that’s set up within the story; there are Dark Elders (we think of them as gods) who used to be in power on Earth and want their power back, so they’ve been working with John Dee (another human immortal) to help them take it back — in exchange for tempting rewards for doing so, of course. There are Elders who haven’t turned dark and are happy to leave things as they are, so Nicholas turns to them to help him get the book back so that the world isn’t put in danger. For mythology buffs, it’s fun to see familiar gods, like Hecate, and read Michael Scott’s vision of how she would live and how her home would look. I also like having the familiar historical figures of Flamel and Dee included in the book. The way that magic works and how it is described is fascinating — I like the idea of magic being an extension of someone’s aura. Overall, this book has interesting ideas and being able to spend time in this world that Scott has created is a joy. However, as first mentioned, it’s a lot of exposition. I wish there were a bit more action or conflict, but hopefully that’ll be present in future books. As a first book, this is pretty good. It’s not the most enthralling start to a series, but it looks like it’s setting up a really good fantasy story, complete with crazy magic, prophecies, betrayals, etc. I’m excited to see how it’s all going to turn out and am very much looking forward to the sequels. I can’t say whether this is a must-read series or not, but it’s looking promising.
I really love the unique approach at historical fiction combined with science fiction and fantasy in this book. Things like immortal humans, vampires and magic are approached with such detail that there is no room for doubt. The characters have a solid level of development to them and are pretty easy to relate to. I find myself disliking Nicholas Flamel though because he’s not very forthcoming with information, which frustrates me given the situation in which he finds himself.I love the connection that Sophie and Josh have throughout the book, even after Josh begins feeling less important. I’m really happy the author took the time to emphasize how average the two were before that fateful day in the bookshop because it helped keep focus on how lost they are in the world they’ve been thrust into. The story is interesting and moves really well. I had trouble putting it down! For this review and more, please visit my blog at vicariousbookworm.wordpress.com
Josh Newman is hard at work one day when a man by the name of Dr. John Dee enters the building and begins a full out magical battle with his boss, Nick Fleming, while his twin sister Sophie, who works across the street, comes to the scene of the crime with her boss and Nick’s wife, Perry Fleming. Nick and Perry Fleming are really Nicholas and Perenelle Flamel and they are hundreds of years old. Nick was said to be the greatest alchemyst ever and he knows the secret to life (how he and Perry stay alive). Dee is a necromancer and is doing everything in his power to get rid of Nick and Perry for good. He takes a very important book from them called the Book of Abraham the Mage, and without it, things can go terribly wrong. Especially when put into the wrong hands. Nick sees Sophie and Josh as the subject of the prophecy that he knows… the twins hold the power to both destroy and save the world. Nick takes Sophie and Josh to meet Hekate who has the power to awaken the twins’ powers. Dee does his dirty work and tries to trick people because it’s what he does best, but it doesn’t really work in his favor. Sophie and Josh are taken on the adventure of a lifetime. This novel was very well written. It is one I have read multiple times. It is full of mystery, magic, and thrilling adventure. It leaves readers wanting more. If you enjoy mystery and magic, this is the perfect book for you! Especially because there are more books to follow in this series. One thing I like about the storyline is how Josh and Sophie fit in. They have a unique brother/sister bond that makes the story better. I’m not one to be interested in these kinds of books, but I enjoyed reading this very much, and I look forward to reading more of the books in this series.
