Surprisingly fun references to Rockaway Blvd., Jackie Robinson Pkwy., The Conduit, Verrezanno Bridge, Staten Island, Bklyn., Queens, L.I.N.Y., etc., you know -- the "Old Stomping Ground." (Do I know you?) And then, the icing on the cake, Georgetown Law and 'GW.' The Duncan men and women are authentically drawn and this plot just begs for a movie treatment! There's so much more I'd like to write but I'm in so much of a hurry to start the next book in this series. Thank you Mr. Weber! I proudly recommend this exciting fast-paced action-infused book. I only wish that I had discovered this series earlier!
Iï¸ decided to try a new Author, and boy am Iï¸ glad Iï¸ did. Iï¸ couldn’t put my book down when Iï¸ started reading it. Iï¸ was on a cruise and couldn’t wait to get home to start the next one. I’m so very happy Iï¸ tried someone new.
Wasn't going to read this book because i'm not usually into this kind of read but, as an avid reader this is a must read. The Duncan Family is something else. The book kept you wanting to read more to find out what happened next. The big disappointment was not being able to slap Paris....LoL...I orders 2 and 3 read them both over night....A good read, lots of action...you can visualize the characters.
I just finished reading Carl Weber and Eric Pete - The Family Business - $9.87. When this book came out in February last year, I was there at his store, Urban Knowledge, listening to him and Eric and purchasing 10 books for friends and myself to get autographed. I am a HUGE, BIG, FANATIC fan of Carl Weber and his story telling. That's what it is, "Story telling" in the best layout ever. Once I got home, I gingerly placed the book on the counter, stared at it, held it, and glided my fingers over the cover and binding. I opened and smell it. Then put it face front on the top shelf of my bookcase to view whenever I walked into my library. I knew I would read it, but not yet. I had to savor it for a long while, with salivating eagerness. Waiting patiently for the right time to read it. Then it was time. Two weeks ago. Why in the hell did I wait so long? Weber's next book, THE MAN IN 3B - $11.99 comes out January 29. On February 1, he will be at Books A Million and I will be there, front roll, waiting and salivating.Carl Weber, Kimberla Lawson Roby, Pamela Samuels Young, Eric Jerome Dickey and many, many, many more authors, I buy their books, some 5 or 10 copies, and I hold mine until I know the date of their next book. I cannot read Carl, Kimberla, Pamela as soon as I get it, because the thrill and ride is over. It's over too fast and I cannot wait, just cannot damn wait until the next book. So I sit, watch, wait, like "Gollum/Smeagol from the Hobbit. "My Precious, my precious!!!!!The Duncan's, run by the Patriarch, L.C. Duncan, his beautiful wife Chippy and their kids, run a successful car business. There's the out of control, who knows she is one of the American top model crazy ass daughter, Paris. Ostentatious, son Rio who may or may not be gay. Orlando, ladies man with just a small addiction problem, not necessarily drugs (Sonny Corleone - Godfather part 1). Vegas, favorite son with some "jail issues (Michael Corleone). A "Black Paris Hilton" daughter, London and her husband, Harris (Tom Hagen - Godfather part 1) who feels out of place in the family. If this sounds familiar, it is, it's The Godfather - The African American version. I love it. Drama, secrets, mafia, Mexican cartels, wit, love and scandal with Carl Weber's story telling touch. You think you are reading just an average book of secrets, murders, etc from a soap opera, no ding dong way. You are hit with the "What the hell, I did not see that coming." The father, L. C. Duncan, wants to retire and give the business over to Orlando, but dirt starts flying and it's sticking to everyone at the same time. You can't keep good secrets down; they are just too succulent to keep quiet. You can also tell whose writing style is who. Carl tells the story and Eric adds the flavor. It's like a Louisiana gumbo with kick ass Texas Pete Hot sauce. The next books, "FAMILY BUSINESS 2" in September 2013. "TO PARIS WITH LOVE continuation of the character Paris from Family Business" in December 2013 and "CHOIR DIRECTOR" in March 2014. I also heard that there may be a TV show in 2014 based upon the Family Business saga. I cannot, cannot, cannot wait to get my hands on his books, "my precious, my precious, I will wait for my precious." And remember, "It's not personal, It's business."Black Kindle - African American Books on the Kindle Blog
I haven't read a Carl Weber novel in a few years and I have never read anything by Eric Pete. I am not sure who the dominate voice is. I will say the first half read very different from the second half. The second half of book is a typical hood book. There were characters and scenes that were useless and when the full scope of the novel is revealed, even less made sense. The family was underdeveloped, didn't really get the gist of who they were and by end of book, what you thought you knew was totally flipped. It's written as if they're not sure what genre they were shooting for as it does a 360 in the middle.I have never had spoilers in my reviews and won't start now, so this will be kind of vague. The kids seem superficial. Paris the youngest child was a party girl then switched to be the family savior. No, that didn't work well with me. Her Twin brother Rio used as a family pawn who does that? Jr, the only child not named after a city, was very limited in the story. London, the oldest daughter and forth in order, flip flopped between being strong independent to a damsel in distress. Harris is London's husband and family lawyer and thinks he is the most vital member of the family. Vegas, the next to oldest son, is the one everyone assumes will run the family one day. Seemed to be away on family business and as such was mentioned a lot but made no impact in book. The explanation for his absence didn't match the flow of book as was it portrayed rending him a useless character. Last but not least, Orlando seemed to have all in order but was a big kid with money. I wanted to see more from the mother, Chippy. Again her part in the story was way too vague and I was left feeling like "who is this woman?"With the questions asked in the back of the book it tends to lead that there will be a part two and they tend to address some of the open ends. I am undecided if I will continue to read. I'd like to hear more of Vegas' story. Wide open paternities and a few unanswered questions may lead me to give it one more try.SiStar TeaARC Book Club Inc.3 star ratingApril 2012
